Canceled by the Court of Arbitration for Sport in Lausanne the suspension of the Iranian Judo Federation

The matter is within the competence of the International Judo Federation (IFJ)

Canceled by the Court of Arbitration for Sport in Lausanne the suspension of the Iranian Judo Federation

The CAS issued the Arbitration Award which involved the Judo Federation of the Islamic Republic of Iran (IRI JF) and the International Judo Federation (IJF) canceling the decision of the IJF Disciplinary Commission which suspended the Iranian judo federation indefinitely from all competitions, from administrative and social activities organized or authorized by the IJF. The decision was made following an investigation initiated during the 2019 World Championships, assuming that the Iranian federation had pressured Iranian judoka Saied Mollaei to withdraw from the competition to avoid fighting with an Israeli judoka.

The IRI JF appealed against the IJF's decision which provided for the indefinite suspension "until the Iranian Judo Federation gives strong guarantees and demonstrates that it will respect the IJF Statutes and accept that their athletes fight against Israeli athletes" .

The CAS therefore established that the I.R.I. JF has committed serious violations of the IJF rules and that penalties in accordance with the IJF regulations should be imposed. However, it concluded that the type of sanction (unlimited suspension) imposed in the contested decision of 22 October 2019 had no legal basis in the IJF regulations. As a result, the College partially upheld the appeal and overturned the decision taken by the IJF Disciplinary Commission on 22 October 2019. The matter was referred back to the IJF Disciplinary Commission for its possible further decisions.
